Obituary of Joe Barnes
Joe Barnes, age 72, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018, at Oklahoma City, Okla. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 20, 2018, in The Chapel at Griffin ~ Hillcrest with Pastor Steve Skinner to officiate. Interment to follow in McAlister Cemetery.
Joe was born on August 1, 1945, at Porum, Oklahoma, to Sherman H. Barnes and Ester (Scott) Barnes. He graduated from Blackwell High School in 1963 and joined the US Marine Corps on March 25, 1972 and was honorably discharged on April 2, 1974. Joe completed boot camp at 29 Palms, California. He served as a Staff Sergeant and a Warrant Officer. He married Sandra Lee Barnes on October 14, 1980, at Sevier, Tennessee. The couple had been married for over 38 years when he passed. Joe was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to the Lone Grove, Okla., Chapter, and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and served as Past Governor for the Lodge. He volunteered for the Moose Lodge Thanksgiving Dinner for over 14 years and volunteered for many years at “It’s From The Heart” in Lone Grove. Joe loved to golf, fish, drive his tractor, and play his guitar and fiddle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Ester Barnes.
Joe is survived by his wife, Sandra, of the home, brother, Willard Barnes of Ponca City, Okla., and sister, Carthene Logan and husband, Eyvind, also of Ponca City. His sons, Barry Barnes and Bryan Barnes, and daughter, Kristen K. Mandell. Two step-children he considered his own, Ginger Hudson and Sandy Baker. Three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers will be Barry Barnes, Bryan Barnes, Terry Bateman, Boyd Ellis, Charlie Roberts, and Jeremy Shorter.
A visitation will be held on Thursday evening, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, April 19, 2018, at Griffin-Hillcrest of Ardmore, Okla.
