Obituary of Sara Alice (Carson) Cope
Sara Alice (Carson) Cope, age 100, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Ardmore, Okla. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at The Mannsville United Methodist Church with The Reverend Ron King and The Reverend David Daniel to officiate. Services will be under the direction of the family. Cremation under the direction of Griffin~Hillcrest Crematory.
Sara was born on September 8, 1918, in the home of her parents, Dwight and Dorcas (Riddlesperger) Carson, at Malakoff, Texas. She was the first grandchild on both sides of her family with plenty of aunts and uncles and later, cousins, around. She attended Malakoff schools and graduated from Malakoff High School in 1936. She attended college in Jacksonville, Texas, and received her Associate’s Degree. It was there that Sara met her future husband, Burney Combs Cope. She then enrolled at Texas University in Austin, Texas, and earned her Bachelor of Art’s Degree in 1940 and immediately began teaching high school English and Speech. On Christmas Day in 1942, Sara and the then Seminary student, Burney Cope, were married and, after two and a half years, moved from south Texas to Oklahoma in order for Burney to continue his education at SMU. She taught for many years and served as a substitute teacher when she gave up permanency to serve as a Methodist minister’s wife for many years. They served several churches in their sixty-nine and half year marriage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Reverend Burney C. Cope, in 2011, daughter, Jane (Cope) Welch, grandson, Tim Hicks, and great-grandson, Van Hicks.
Sara is survived by her beloved children: Wayne Cope and wife, Nancy, of Ardmore, Sue Stitt and husband, Neil, of Ardmore, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Her sister, Martha Hardt, of Dallas, Texas, and her brother, Harold Carson and wife, Edwina, of Malakoff.
