Obituary of Betty Sue “Mama Sue” Culberson
Betty Sue “Mama Sue” Culberson, age 62, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019, in Oklahoma City, Okla. A visitation will be held Friday, June 7, 2019, from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM, at Griffin~Hillcrest Funeral Home.
Betty was born to James Culberson and Minnie (Hooper) Culberson on July 13, 1956, at Odessa, Texas. She attended school at Fred Moore Elementary and graduated from Denton High School in Denton, Texas. Mama Sue worked for Gerald Wells restoring buildings. She then worked at Linda Wilson’s Antique Store in Ardmore. She loved decorating, cleaning, and taking care of others.
She was preceded in death by her mother, her only sister, Ruby Jean Taylor, and two aunts, Mary Helen Jones and Wilhelmina Francis, her “Aunt Dottie.”
She leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Tavares Culberson and his fiancé Mahonna Owens, four grandchildren: Shay Culberson, of Moore, Okla., Phoenix Donahue of Lone Grove. Okla., La’Niya Culberson, and Tavares Culberson, Jr., both of Ardmore, Okla., one great-granddaughter, Rayleigh Paige Baysinger, one nephew, Richard Taylor, two nieces, Susan Grimes and Nisha Wright, all of Denton, Texas. Cousins who she helped raise, Scottra Jones, LaQuinda Jones, and Kimberly White, her spouse who she loved “Derail” Darryll Newberry, of Ardmore, Okla., her childhood sister friend, Ms. Peggy Jackson, of Denton, Texas, and a host of cousins and friends.
