Ron and I worked for Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO) in Oklahoma City 1973 - 1974. Based at Bethlehem Center, together we helped residents of the community south of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences organize Concerned Citizens which advocated for keeping Carter G. Woodson Elementary School open, rather than its students being bused to other parts of the City. In 1974, when just before I left NSO, Ron and members of Concerned Citizens gave me as a going away gift the greatest honor that I ever received, a string of dollar bills folded into a cigar box. My wife, Jan, and I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for graduate school, and Ron and I drove a U-Haul van from OKC to the Bay, sleeping under the stars in the desert when we got too tired to drive. In San Francisco, Ron introduced me to his sister, Roza Taylor. After grad school, I worked in the Bay Area for a couple of years before Jan and I moved overseas for about 12 years. I lost touch with Ron during those years. After we moved to Richmond, VA, in 1990, I tried to reconnect with Ron, but eventually he found me. Since then, we stayed in touch through phone calls every couple of weeks or so. Ron was a very good man, with a good heart, and I was very lucky to have him as a friend.

I am deeply saddened to learn that Ron Johnson has passed. While serving as Administrator of the Oklahoma Office of Personnel Management and Cabinet Secretary, I had the opportunity to know and work with Ron. He was a talented and dedicated public servant, who made many outstanding contributions on behalf of the people of Oklahoma. My heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues.

I met Ronald August 1974 when my husband Jessie Sattwhite hosted a BBQ for him and other California Douglas Alumni at our home. I remember the exact date because my son was born later that night. It was a fun day for Douglas Dragons! We later met in Reno, NV when Jessie took him to dinner. At the dinner, he told us about the book, The Art of War. At the time we were not familiar with this book, but I have since read it several times and recommended it to others; it is a book that many have read now. I recently saw him at my nephew's induction into a prestigious OU’s law "society". He and I talked about the world, politics, and civil rights. I remember Jessie telling me he was "smart". He was knowledgeable and did not mind sharing his knowledge in a humble humanitarian way without being boastful. I always left our meetings with new information; he was indeed gifted and black. I did not know many of Jessie's classmates and can count on one hand the number of times I was in Ronald's presence. Each time he impressed me with his intelligence and knowledge, and I left being more informed. I am guessing that is the effect he had on many. I am sure he will be missed by his family in friends. RIP Ronald and say hello to your classmate and my husband.

We met in 1988 and became part of the Remington Park parimutual crew. Our friendship lasted until you got your wings. Rest well, my friend.

freedmen in Ardmore, Ok around 2000. My favorite cousin named Clayton took me by his law office eager for us to meet. We hit it off like old friends and remained that way since.
I last talked to him a few months ago when he wanted to get my views on lawsuit Equity Case 7071 regarding the transfer of about 2,000 people who were mixed African-Chickasaw Indians and mixed African-Choctaw Indians who were entitled to 320 acres of land or the equivalent of 640,000 acres or $20,000,000 in 1907.
It always baffled me he was the lawyer but wanted to know my opinion?
Ronald was also (as we learned later) a DNA cousin and also a Chickasaw Freedmen descendant so our conversations were always "lively" because I think in another life I was an attorney????
He was a good brother and a good friend, I will miss him dearly.
